I moved from England to Ballinskelligs in County Kerry in 1991 and spent the next twelve years working as a teacher for children with special needs and specific learning difficulties.

In 2003 I found myself at an unforeseen crossroads. It was at this time that my friend Barbara showed me the basics of felt making. I knew immediately that I had found a creative medium through which I would be able to carve out a new career for myself.

At Barbara's suggestion I entered a European competition to exhibit a sculpture based on the King Laurin legend. The idea I submitted was accepted and the Tower of Peace and Remembrance I created now stands in a clearing in a forest at the foot of the Dolomites. It was in the making of this tower with its felted walls, climbing briars and roses that I noticed how effective felt could be when illuminated, even by sunlight.

Under the guidance and tuition of Duncan, another talented and patient friend, I gained the skills in metalwork, electrics and construction that have enabled me to realize the ideas I have for my light pieces.

Mainly working with copper and handcrafted felt I have also used steel and turned wood to create some of my commissions.

Primarily working on a commission basis for private individuals my one-off pieces are produced with a spirit of experimentation and determination to reflect elements of my client as well as to enhance and blend with the environment of the client’s home. Meeting the challenge of each commission ensures constant creativity and skill’s development for me.

The pieces bring together the extremes of hard and soft in their use of recycled copper, steel and wood and the wealth of fibres available for the handcrafted felt. Aside from the huge variety of sheep wools which all give a different texture, transparency and form, silks, linens and other fibres are used to produce layers and effects for the light pieces both when they are lit and unlit.

As an unlit feature in a room the pieces are unique and intriguing but when illuminated their vibrancy, colour, tone and texture redefine their overall appearance in surprising and often breathtaking ways.

Please visit my gallery to see some of the work produced to date. If you are interested in commissioning a piece or purchasing a piece from the Gallery for your own home, workspace or for a friend please get in touch.
